Big Shoulders

I lift my eyes toward the mountains.  Where will my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.  (HCSB) Psalm 121:1-2

In the 1956 movie “The Searchers” Marion Mitchell Morrison, aka John Wayne (1907-1979), took on the role of Ethan Edwards, a former confederate soldier.   Ethan and Martin Pawley set out together in search of Ethan’s niece, Debbie, who was taken by the Comanche.  At one point in the film, Ethan finally meets with the Chief Scar, chief of the Comanche.  Chief Scar knows Ethan as “You big shoulders.”  In a moving rescue scene, Ethan makes good use of those “big shoulders” as he reaches down to pick up Debbie and carry her back to the horse and ride back home.

Two brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone are musicians in the band for KING AND COUNTRY.   These brothers in their 2014 hit song titled “Shoulders” also sing about a person with really “big shoulders.”

When confusion’s my companion
And despair holds me for ransom
I will feel no fear
I know that You are near

When I’m caught deep in the valley
With chaos for my company
I’ll find my comfort here
‘Cause I know that You are near

You mend what once was shattered
And You turn my tears to laughter
Your forgiveness is my fortress
Oh Your mercy is relentless
My help comes from You.  You’re right here, pulling me through.  You carry my weakness, my sickness, my brokenness all on Your shoulders, Your shoulders.                                                                                      My help comes from You,You are my rest, my rescue.  I don’t have to see to believe that You’re lifting me up on Your shoulders, Your shoulders
It is entirely possible that at some point in time you can find yourself in one of those stanzas.  Where do Joel and Luke, as well as many others in need of help, look?   They do not look for people with “big shoulders” even John “big shoulders” Wayne died in 1979.  The above Scripture passage indicates that they will lift up their eyes to see that help will come from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. The chorus of this song indicates that our Lord’s shoulders can pull us through, carry our weakness, sickness, and brokenness “ALL’ on his shoulders.  Our Lord is our rest and our rescue and He is the one lifting us up on His shoulders.

Our help comes from Jesus our “big shoulders”,                                                    Pastor Tom
